The need to address cyber security challenges has become extremely important as we move towards an economy powered by connectivity, big data and the Internet of Things. Governments, large enterprises and even start-ups can no longer invest in obsolete methods of detection and defense and have to understand how cyber security impacts their strategy and long-term sustainability.

At the Cyber security conference, our aim is to bring together industries, government and global experts to talk about this trending topic.

    Osman Sultan was named Chief Executive Officer of du in January 2006, and has played a major role in creating a telecommunications company that has transformed the UAE’s industry monopoly. Under Osman’s dynamic leadership, we have become one of the region’s leading telecoms companies, with a market share of nearly 50% in mobile subscribers. Osman is one of the industry’s most widely-recognised and influential leaders and is credited with leading one of the region’s most vibrant success stories. Osman joined the telecommunications industry in 1984, and has held leadership positions in some of the world’s leading telecommunications companies, including the Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (MobiNil) which he helped create in 1998 and served as its CEO and Managing Director for eight years. Osman has held several board positions. He is also widely recognized as a keynote speaker on telecommunications, ICT, digital, smart cities and government matters.

    Tom Ridge is the First U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and former Governor of Pennsylvania. Founder & Chairman of Ridge Global, LLC. As the company's chief executive, Ridge leads a team of international experts that help businesses and governments address a range of needs throughout their organizations, including security and infrastructure protection, emergency preparedness and response, energy, strategic growth, maritime management and other issues that encompass a diverse portfolio. He also serves as chairman of Ridge Insurance Solutions Company, which he launched in October 2014 partnering with five Lloyds of London syndicates to provide an innovative cyber insurance offering designed to help clients' manage digital risk more effectively. He is the co-founder of the strategic advisory firm, Ridge Schmidt Cyber, an executive services firm that helps leaders in business and government navigate the increasing demands of cyber security. And, he is a founding partner of the Ridge Policy Group, a full service government affairs firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and Harrisburg, PA. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Ridge became the first assistant to the President for Homeland Security and, on January 24, 2003, became the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. An engaging and dynamic speaker, Ridge regularly addresses audiences throughout the world on issues, such as security, terrorism, global engagement, leadership, technology and more.

    David Francis was appointed Huawei’s European Cyber Security Officer in August 2015, having previously been the CSO for Huawei in the UK since 2013. David started his career with British Telecom as an engineer and has held senior positions in the IT sector in the UK and the US since. Prior to joining Huawei, David was a Chief Operating Officer with an eCommerce platform. Also, he has worked for Symantec for over 9 years, of which the last 5 as Vice President of Operations, responsible for the global SaaS / cloud operations unit. Working closely with government and local authority customers, he has a vast experience with cyber security challenges and requirements for both the public and the private sector.

    Global Vice President and General Manager of IBM Security Services
    Chris Esemplare currently serves as Global Vice President and General Manager of IBM Security Services. In this role Chris manages all aspects of the Security Services business including strategy, offering management, sales and marketing, investment planning and execution. This team works with clients around the world to provide consulting, systems integration, managed and cloud services. The team also includes cyber threat intelligence analysts from various disciplines. Chris started working with IBM’s Security Services in 2007 with the acquisition and integration of Internet Security Systems. He led the growth of ISS, transforming the business from a country-based model to a globally integrated practice. Today, IBM Security Services has the broadest and deepest services capability in the industry with over 3,000 professionals in the practice and growing. The Security practice is recognized within IBM as a top investment area and strategic capability of the firm. Previous to leading and transforming the security business, Chris was part of the team that sold the IBM Personal Computer Division to Lenovo and then managed the China-based company as a client. Before that, he managed IBM’s Electronics Industry team in North America.

    As a technologist, Giuseppe has deep roots in multiple large high-tech companies. He began his career in 1995 in Telecom Italia as an IP system engineer, joined Marconi plc (now Ericsson) as a System Engineer Manager in 1999 and afterwards Siemens in 2002. In Siemens and subsequently Nokia, Giuseppe’s roles have been diverse and of increasing responsibility. These roles include Business Development Director of the IP Architecture and Solution Department of Siemens Italy and subsequently Vice President of the same unit. This was followed by Head of Product and Partner Management of the Business Line covering IP routing and security solutions portfolio primarily built around partner organizations solutions. In 2013 Giuseppe started a special program named “End to End Security” having the target to create a Business Unit focused on Cybersecurity that he is now heading since 2014. After the Nokia acquisition of Alcatel Lucent, the Security Business Unit has enlarged its scope to include IoT, becoming the new Nokia Security & IoT Business Unit.

    Naji Ukaily is the Cyber Security Lead for the Middle East. He assumed the role in 2014. Naji has over a decade’s experience in Information Technology from the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions and has deep expertise in working closely and strategically with a range of customers. As Cyber Security Lead, Naji leads the Cisco go-to-market strategy for The Middle East, across all lines of business. Naji’s focused on enhancing Cisco’s Security Architecture business by helping customers defend themselves before, during and after security attacks.

Lorenzo’s broad experience in large international projects and initiatives is a key value in digital transformation initiatives triggered by the big emerging trends in IT industry. He regularly leads multi-disciplinary teams with senior professionals to define strategic solutions to complex business, technical and organizational challenges.

    Chief Cyber Security Evaluation Expert of Huawei Internal Cyber Security Lab
    Prof. Yale Li is the Chief Cyber Security Evaluation Expert of Huawei Internal Cyber Security Lab. He leads cyber security evaluation for all Huawei products, security standards creation for industry-wide cloud services, cyber security strategy communications to foreign governments and enterprise customers. Yale currently serves as Chairman of Greater China Region and East Asia Region for Cloud Security Alliance (CSA). He has led many initiatives such cloud security architecture, standards, and guidance for CSA. He is also Senior Fellow & Adjunct Professor of XiAN JiaoTong University, and Visiting Scholar at University of Washington. Prior to joining Huawei in 2014, Yale had worked as the Global Chief Security Architect for Microsoft Corporation in US for 16 years, with responsibilities for security strategy, architecture, solutions, and research of emerging technologies such as cloud computing, mobile computing, and big data. Before working for Microsoft in 1998, Yale was the Chief Technology Architect for an IBM company, Cofounder/ CTO of multiple tech startups, and research assistant to CERN's Nobel Prize and Rutherford Medal laureates. He published several books and large amount of papers. Yale spoke at RSA Conference and many major security events. He was one of the earliest CCSKs and had 20+ ICT certifications.

    Carlos Domingo was appointed Chief New Business and Innovation Officer at du in 2015. He is responsible for the development of all our big data and new product and service initiatives including all digital, smart city initiatives, du TV, and advancements to our digital channels du.ae and the du mobile app. Prior to joining us, Carlos was Chief Product and Business Development for Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) where he managed all company product development, digital services, alliances and partnerships and business intelligence and analytic. Earlier in his career, he spent eight years at Telefonica where he was the CEO of Telefonica R&D and the CEO for New Business and Innovation for Telefonica Digital.

    Marwan Abdulla Bin Dalmook joined the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company - du in 2006. With over 14 years’ experience in the telecommunications and information technology security industry, he is an inspirational leader with a passion for innovation in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. Prior to joining du, Marwan held the position of Wireline Project Manager at Dubai Holding, where he was responsible for the design and implementation of various telecommunications solutions including fibre and copper infrastructure, SDH/PDH infrastructure and the Dubai ring IP transport network around Dubai.

    A committed and talented Emirati, Wesam has more than 18 years of experience in strategic leadership positions where he has leveraged Information Technology to create innovative channels and Smart Government infrastructure to improve the quality of public services for citizens, residents, visitors and businesses in Dubai. Wesam has worked in both government and the private sector in high profile organizations. From 2009 to 2012, Wesam was Vice President, Information Technology at World Trade Centre where he led the transformation of IT through a number of initiatives including the implementation of sales force automation, CRM, and ERP implementation. Prior to that, he was Director, Information Technology at Emaar Properties. During his time at Emaar, Wesam led the global rollout of sales automation and ERP across Emaar subsidiaries. This included countries such as Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Canada. Wesam is not new to Dubai Smart Government as he was previously Head of Application Services from 2002 to 2007. During that time Wesam led the implementation of unified business process and ERP across Dubai Government entities. Wesam holds a Master’s degree in Computer science and engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a Bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University. Wesam is also an author with published research in Computer Security.

Hackathon

During du Cyber Security Conference, a hackathon will be taking place where students from across the UAE will test their skills against information security challenges.

Ten teams comprising of university students from the UAE will test their hacking skills at the hackathon for the grand prize of AED 20,000.

The Hackathon will be designed as an educational exercise to give participants an experience in conducting and reacting to cyberattacks found in the real world.

Requirements:

  • University-level students in the UAE can register and form teams to compete with each other. Each team should have a minimum of 2 members and a maximum of 5 members.
  • Participants need to bring their own laptops in order to compete. The laptops should be able to connect to the wired and wireless on-premise network infrastructure.
  • The laptops need to be able to run Linux natively or emulated through a virtual machine.
  • Participants need to have all the tools required in order to perform a full set of penetration and exploitation tests on the provided infrastructure.
  • Networking cables and multi-socket electricity outlets will be available.
